CBT THERAPY
Cognitve Behavoural Therapy, CBT, is an evidence-based therapy which is structured and pragmatic, where the client and therapist work together to move from problems to goals.
Therapy usually starts with an assessment session where you can explain the issues you are facing and discuss your goals for therapy. Together we create a working theory about how your problem is maintained and make a plan for how you could begin to overcome it.
Therapy sessions focus on understanding how to break out of the vicious cycles that are maintaining your problem. There tends to be an emphasis on between session tasks or ‘homework’. These might include some brief writing, deliberately changing a behaviour, attention training exercises and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) exercises. These tasks are discussed and agreed together in the session and are tailored to target problems and reach your goals. It is a good idea to have a notebook where you can jot down important points and out of session tasks.
